Camarillo Disaster Assistance Response Team - D.A.R.T.

Home Page

In October 1989, organized and trained citizens did much to assist the communities that were struck by the Loma Prieta earthquake. Their efforts were recognized and greatly appreciated by emergency services professionals and the citizens of the communities they served. The City of Camarillo recognized the importance of having a citizen's response group which could be activated to assist emergency service workers in the event of disaster or large scale emergency. In March 1990, by City Council resolution, the Camarillo Disaster Assistance Response Team (D.A.R.T.) was formed.

The team and its activities are coordinated through the Camarillo Police Department. We have as our stated purpose, "The Camarillo D.A.R.T. is to respond in support of the City of Camarillo and the County of Ventura, under the direction of local law enforcement, in times of general need, emergency and declared disasters". To meet this objective, all D.A.R.T. members are trained in advanced medical intervention, traffic control, emergency radio communications, Incident Command, and skills necessary for light urban search and rescue operations.

Members wear distinctive uniforms with organizational shoulder and name patches. Other equipment issued by the city includes USAR Helmets with lights, reflective vests, rain gear, and communication equipment. Supplemental equipment includes pry bars, sledge hammers, portable halogen lighting, first aid kits, stretchers, generators, and the mobile command post known as the Emergency Response Vehicle or ERV.

Our NEW "ERV" has arrived.  It is a 2011 F-350 Crew Cab and can hold lots more equipment than our previous unit. This vehicle serves as the command, planning, and communications center for a given incident or event. The ERV contains all equipment necessary to respond to emergencies, rescue, and advanced first aid situations.  In addition to the ERV, supplemental supplies of shovels, cribbing, lights, extension cords, generators, stretchers, back-boards, blankets etc., needed at the time of emergency activation, are stored in a 12 foot support trailer.

Since major disasters are not everyday events, D.A.R.T. members assist the Camarillo Police Department and the City with traffic, medical and safety at such events as the Christmas Parade, Fourth of July Fireworks Show, Fiesta Days, STOMP Dances, Old Town Car Shows, Chamber of Commerce Expo and other events as requested. Currently, nine members are certified EMT's and provide additional level of medical support.

Call outs for D.A.R.T. have included the Northridge Earthquake, the La Conchita Mud slide, hazardous materials incidents, missing persons searches, the Alaska FLT 271 plane crash and a call to assist the Ventura County Fire Department at the Green Meadows Fire.  Members also assist the City and VC Fire department during C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) classes and exercises.

The Camarillo D.A.R.T. has members of all ages, backgrounds, professions, and talents.  Members must be at least 18 years of age, live or work in the Camarillo area, and be in good health.  Most importantly, members need to have a strong desire to serve their community with a minimum commitment of 60 hours per year.

General Meetings are held on the FIRST Wednesday of every month at 7:00PM in the Camarillo Police Station Community Room.  If you are interested in gathering additional information, click here.
